‘Europe’s EV numbers continue to grow, but challenges still ahead for EV rollout’

Jon Lawes, Managing Director at MHC Mobility, a leading pan-European leasing business providing fleet solutions across all asset types and industry sectors, comments on today’s (19 April) ACEA European vehicle registration figures, which saw passenger car registrations increase by 28.8% compared to March last year. Electric Vehicle registrations were also up by 58%, reaching a new high market share of 13.9%:

“It’s encouraging to see electric vehicle (EV) numbers continue to grow, building on what was already a strong start to the year. Fleet managers have been clamouring for more EVs to help customers transition to sustainable fleets and will welcome this sustained growth.

“The market has seen a series of new policies in recent weeks, including mandatory charging point targets to start closing Europe’s serious EV infrastructure deficit, and the removal of regulatory barriers through the Net Zero Industry Act, which will bolster manufacturer confidence in the European market.

“The priority is tackling the infrastructure issues but even with these measures there a long way to go. There are huge disparities in the availability of charging points across Europe, with over 40% concentrated in just two countries – Germany and the Netherlands. To meet user needs and the continent’s climate goals, policymakers need to properly address this gap or else Europe’s EV momentum is at risk of stalling.”
